  1. When an ideology is used to defend an existing system of the government or to advocate a minuscule or radical change in the system, it becomes political. A political ideology is therefore a concept which involves a deliberate search for a better society according to certain predetermined model. On the other hand Political theory is a broader concept which tries to establish the purpose of a model of government only after critical evaluation and scrutiny, then let it be either philosophical concept or the scientific aspect of political theory. The most striking feature of political theory is its ability to separate itself from the set of ideas that aim to define politics in a false manner.
In other words Political theory can be viewed and explained in the light of stress and strains emanating from the actual politics stir but with the basic feature of critical evaluation attached to it or inherent to it.
To cite a few examples in the context mentioned herein, and to clearly demarcate the thin line of difference between the political ideology and political theory one can resort to Aristotle and machiavelli's theories. As on one hand aristotle is seemed to be defensive about the topics concerned with the slavery and subjugation of women and on the other hand he can be viewed as the exponent of instability of the constitutions stating that 'power and virtue cannot coexist', which is accepted as an eternal truth. Same goes with machiavelli as on one hand he advices prince to set aside all moral consideration which is not acceptable and on the other hand he gives deep insights regarding the human behaviour which can be used in diplomacy and statecraft. This shows that how the critical evaluation helps in segregation of truth embodied in these theories from the elements which are mere product arising out of political situations.
Political theory according to andrew hacker is always disinterested and dispassionate and calls for impartial observation of social and political reality, neither favouring a particular concept nor delving into condemnation thus subjecting it to fair and critical evaluation. On the contrary political ideology aims to establish a particular political and social arrangement. Thus, at times political theory seems to justify and prescribe a course of action as if it were a political ideology but both differ in the fundamental aspect of critical evaluation.
