Karl Marx was the first scholar to come up with a clear ideology. He claimed that communism was a science and ideologies were "false consciousness" . Followers of Marx like Lenin considered communism as an ideology.
Communist states that came into existence were based on the ideas of Marx. Western scholars like Karl Popper and Hannah Arendt considered Marxism as a totalitarian ideology which does not lead to scientific thinking.
Karl Mannheim has given concept of sociology of knowledge according to which every ideology has a social base.
Post modernist scholars like Foucault consider ideologies as grand theories or meta narratives. They consider "knowledge as power". No theory can explain perfect reality , they do not discover truth rather they create truth. There is no ultimate truth rather there are regimes of truth.Particular view becomes dominant discourse.
